Case Study Overview

As a Junior UX Designer at a mental health startup, I identified a critical gap in access to mental health resources for marginalized youth. Recognizing this unmet need, I took the initiative to contribute to the design and development of a dedicated mobile application tailored to this specific demographic.

Situation

My responsibilities included conducting thorough market research and in-depth investigations into youth mental health statistics and trends. This evidence-based approach ensured that our design decisions were grounded in relevant data and user needs.

Task

My initial steps involved comprehensive user research with marginalized youth and a thorough competitive analysis of existing mental health applications. This allowed me to pinpoint key pain points hindering resource accessibility. Based on these insights, my team and I redesigned the user onboarding flow, prioritizing personalization. Our research indicated a strong user preference for customization, leading to the integration of a brief onboarding survey to tailor app features to individual needs. Furthermore, to enhance engagement and motivation, we strategically incorporated gamification elements, including a customizable avatar and a virtual 'garden home' environment.

Action

During a 3-day Design Sprint hosted by ELEVATE at Wellesley College, my team and I rapidly iterated and developed a working prototype for a mental health application. Although we did not place in the designation, our mentor provided positive feedback on our approach to addressing a gap in the youth mental health market and our ability to deliver a functional prototype under a tight deadline.
