Between the Books
2/21/2026
I began to work at the Central Library this year! Between the thousands of books and shelves, you’ll find people like me carefully organizing the books in order. Here are some things I’m learning on my journey.
There are indeed so many stories. I thought at the ripe age of 15 that I had read most things. Turns out there could be as many stories as people who live in Los Angeles which is close to two million according to the census. The sheer number of books I am surrounded by humbles me to remember I don’t know everything yet.
Knowledge and understanding can be impermanent. Along with the ever-changing number of stories being written every year, so does our understanding of our world. I found myself reading stories about loss, love, and life and changing my mind every time. And that is okay!
The library is a safe place for some of the most vulnerable. I’m lucky to not have to live on the streets, and also the library is a refuge for those who might have nowhere else to go that day. I remember as a kid, the local library was where I would spend hours after school when I couldn’t go home yet. It was also where I could find stories about everything I was curious about as a teen.
That’s it for now!
